About French schools in Portland and Oregon

This page lists every French immersion and French curriculum school in Portland and Oregon, public, charter and private — each with its program type, tuition, enrollment and accreditation. It is one metro area of an independent directory covering 239 schools across 34 US states.

Dual language programs follow the American curriculum with the school day split between French and English; French curriculum schools follow the French national program and are accredited by the French Ministry of Education. The private schools charge from $18,000 to $30,000 a year, averaging about $22,000.

Oregon’s 7 French-language schools split cleanly between Portland and Eugene, representing two very different models. Eugene has Oregon’s only complete public K–12 French immersion pathway: Charlemagne Elementary (3J School District) → Roosevelt Middle School → South Eugene High School — three consecutive public schools through which a student can move from early grades to graduation entirely tuition-free within the Eugene school district.

Portland’s French landscape is predominantly private. Le Monde French Immersion Public Charter School is the sole free option in the metro, operating as a charter in the greater Portland area. The private options include L’Étoile French Immersion School of Portland and French International School of Oregon — both small AEFE-accredited programs from early childhood through middle or high school. International Leadership Academy in Lake Oswego (a Portland suburb) rounds out the Eastside options.

The geographic tradeoff is clear: Eugene offers fully public K–12 French education within the 3J district, while Portland provides more school choices but at private school rates for most of them.

Eugene’s public K–12 pathway: Charlemagne ES → Roosevelt MS → South Eugene HS is Oregon’s only fully public K–12 French immersion sequence — and one of the few in the entire Pacific Northwest. Families in the 3J School District get uninterrupted immersion at no cost.

What AEFE homologation, LabelFrancÉducation, the American accreditors and the International Baccalaureate each certify is explained in the guide to accreditations and credentials. For younger children, the Portland & Oregon daycare directory covers French daycares and preschools. You can also see every French school in Oregon, or browse the full national directory.

We hope you will find this directory useful, and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, comments or additional information on the schools listed here — or a school we are missing.
