About French schools in Charlotte and North Carolina

This page lists every French immersion and French curriculum school in Charlotte and North Carolina, public and private — each with its program type, tuition, enrollment and accreditation. It is one metro area of an independent directory covering 239 schools across 34 US states.

Dual language programs follow the American curriculum with the school day split between French and English; French curriculum schools follow the French national program and are accredited by the French Ministry of Education. The two private schools, Atlas International School and L'école - French International School of Raleigh, charge between $12,000 and $15,000 a year.

North Carolina has 6 French-language schools across three distinct regions. The Charlotte metro accounts for 4: three Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools French dual language programs (South Academy of World Languages, South Mecklenburg High School, West Mecklenburg High School) plus North Academy of World Languages in Huntersville. Charlotte is unusual in that its public French immersion is concentrated at the high school level, operated through the district’s magnet school system.

Raleigh’s Atlas International School is the state’s only private French-language school, offering bilingual French-English education for early childhood and elementary grades in the Research Triangle area. Blythe Academy of Languages in Greenville (Pitt County Schools) represents eastern North Carolina’s French immersion offering.

The Charlotte high school programs accept students from across the district through the CMS magnet lottery — students are not required to attend their neighborhood school and can apply from any corner of the district.

High-school focused: Charlotte’s three public French programs (South Academy, South Meck, and West Meck) all operate at the high school level. North Carolina is one of the few states where public French immersion at the secondary level is more accessible than at the elementary level.

What AEFE homologation, LabelFrancÉducation, the American accreditors and the International Baccalaureate each certify is explained in the guide to accreditations and credentials. For younger children, a separate daycare directory covers French daycares and preschools. You can also see every French school in North Carolina, or browse the full national directory.

We hope you will find this directory useful, and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, comments or additional information on the schools listed here — or a school we are missing.
